How to Clean Glass Balcony Railings Safely

By Solpath Window Detailing · Published · Updated

Clean glass balcony railings from the balcony floor only: rinse or soak off salt and grit first, wash with a mild solution, squeegee or wipe with a clean microfiber cloth, and dry the metal rail and posts. The outside face of the panels usually cannot be reached safely and is part of the building exterior. Never lean over a railing, stand on furniture or use a ladder on a balcony.

Why railings get so dirty

Railing glass faces straight into the wind. On an oceanfront balcony it takes salt all day, and on a city balcony it takes traffic film and dust. Handprints and splashes from plants and furniture do the rest.

Step by step

  • Rinse or soak the panels to loosen salt and grit before anything wipes across them
  • Wash with a mild solution and a soft applicator
  • Squeegee or wipe with a clean microfiber cloth, working top to bottom
  • Detail the edges where the glass meets the clamps or channel
  • Wipe and dry the metal rail and posts, which corrode if salt is left on them
  • Keep water use modest so nothing runs down onto the balcony below

What stays off limits

  • Leaning over the rail to reach the outside face
  • Standing on chairs, planters or ladders
  • Pressure washers of any kind on a balcony
  • Razor blades on railing glass, which is often tempered or laminated

The outside face

In most buildings the outer face of the railing panels is part of the facade and is cleaned with the rest of the exterior, from rope access or a swing stage. If yours is not, ask the association how it is meant to be done before anyone tries.

Common questions

Do I need to be home during the cleaning?
For exterior-only cleanings, no - as long as we can reach your windows with gates unlocked and pets secured, we can work while you are out. If your service includes interior windows, someone over 18 needs to be home to let us in.
Do you clean condo and high-rise windows?
Yes, the parts an owner is responsible for: the inside of the glass, both faces of the balcony sliders, and railing glass from the balcony side. The outside of fixed tower glass is part of the building facade, which the association has cleaned from rope or a swing stage. Check your building rules on contractors and working hours before booking.
